   CMA’s A Celebration of Independence ~ Oh, What a Night!  

On October 26, more than 230 friends – old & new – packed the de Seversky Mansion for CMA’s annual fundraising gala, “A Celebration of Independence.”   The gala proudly honored cherished friends and past board members, Patricia Carpenter and Thelma Newman; both ladies were awarded The John Walter Humanitarian Award for their outstanding contributions to CMA.   

 

While so many friends contributed to this evening, we are especially grateful for our event sponsors: The Herman Goldman Foundation l Pat Lowy and The Natalie Bailey and Herbert J. Patricia Carpenter
Former Board Member ~ September 1984 through 2010

pat carpetnerPat Carpenter has spent the better part of her life working to improving the lives of others.  A Long Island native, Pat grew up in Great Neck and graduated from Great Neck South High School.  After continuing her education in Manhattan she was offered a position at IBM, where she remained for several years.  Interestingly, IBM quickly recognized they had someone special in their midst – Pat was one of a handful of employees selected to represent the company at the 1964 World’s Fair! Thelma Newman

Former Board Member ~ July 1981 through 2010

Thelma NewmanThelma Newman has always been interested in helping others.  As a college student she volunteered at The New York Philanthropic League, working with children who had Polio and Cerebral Palsy.  After earning her BS from The City College of New York and her MA from Brooklyn College, she taught Law and English at Morris High School in the Bronx and at Girl’s High School in Brooklyn.  During summers she taught English and Law at Erasmus Hall High School.  Her talent for teaching was recognized with an award of excellence.  When her children were teenagers, she tutored emotionally-challenged out-patient adolescents at Long Island Jewish Hillside’s Hospital, under the auspices of Dr. Barbara Goodfriend.
