There are days that we set aside to pay tribute or honor those that deserve accolades for their contributions to society. We set aside a week each year to recognize and celebrate Direct Support Employees’ (DSP) extraordinary work. A Direct Support Professional is someone who works directly with people who have intellectual or developmental disabilities. They help to build and shape the lives of the people they support every day. DSPs aim to assist people in realizing their full potential and help them become integrated and engaged in their communities.
Direct Support Professionals Are Essential Caregivers
The everyday role of a DSP varies. They can be a friend, a mentor, an advocate, a coach, and a cheerleader. At times, they may be a caregiver who assists a person with their health care and activities of daily living. The bond that is created is authentic, fulfilling, and invaluable. As a result, DSP workers know better than anyone when a person they care for is out of sorts and is a valuable resource to help clinicians get to the root cause of the distress.
It takes a unique and selfless person to choose this career path. Each day can have truly challenging moments, but these professionals are prepared for that. They understand the reasons why it can be and approach each moment with care and consideration. Their level of patience is matched only by their dedication. A DSPs goal is not only to support but to teach those they care for to become independent in their daily lives. The journey there can be difficult, but Direct Support Professionals are determined to help people achieve their hopes and dreams.
